There are so many incredible regions in France that have enormous appeal for cyclists. The high mountains of the Alps and Pyrenees draw hundreds of thousands of riders to their historically significant passes each year. No doubt, these mountains are a "must do" for cyclists at some stage, however there is a quite magical appeal in the region (or department) of Provence. Home of course to the magnificent Mt Ventoux and no other climb has a more famous TDF history, its barren slopes and 'mythical' energy are something that must be experienced by all cyclists at some time. But Provence offers so much more riding than just the Ventoux, throw in some of the best wine and food in all of Europe and you have the perfect mix of exertion and reward.
The Cote d'Azur and Maritime Alps are home to some of the oldest and most historically significant villages in Europe. From the charm of the famous "Route de Napoleon" to the other-worldly town of Gourdon the riding options are endless. The hills above Nice, Cannes and Monaco are littered with sinuous quiet roads that penetrate tiny mountain hamlets, it a jaw-dropping experience that many cyclists don't even know exists. The daily routine usually includes; world class cycling, followed by a "recovery dip" in the Mediterranean and topped off with a five-star meal in the old town of Menton. Sounds "hard to take" ha?
